Rules

All competitors, coaches and referees should read these rules carefully. The section ‘General points’ contains general information about the tournament rules; information about the age and weight divisions is in the section ‘Age and weight divisions’.

General points

Competition is open to all Seido karateka.

Youth competitors are those enrolled in School Years 7 & 8 and will generally be 11 and 12 year olds. This division is open to White belts and above.

Collegiate competitors are those enrolled in School Years 9 to 13 and will generally be 13 – 18 year olds. This division is open to White belts and above.

Where a competitor is a different age than their School year cohort, e.g. a 13 year old in Year 8; or a 12 year old in Year 9, or a 19 year old in Year 13; then the respective dojo coach can contact the tournament director to adjust the entry so they are competing in their relevant age group at  tournament@kaizenacademy.co.nz

Adult competitors are those aged 19 years and over.  Where a competitor is younger than 19 years and no longer at school and, they wish to compete in the appropriate age division, then the competitor’s dojo coach can contact the tournament director to adjust the entry at tournament@kaizenacademy.co.nz

Veteran competitors are those aged 45 years and over. Veterans may enter the Adult divisions but NOT BOTH divisions, nor by splitting entries over the two divisions, eg kata with Adults and kumite with Veterans.

Kata – age groupings

Youth – Competition for Year 7 & 8 is organized by kyu grade levels for males and females; not by age groupings.

Collegiate – Competition for Year 9 – 13 is organized into two age groupings (13-15 years and 16-18 years) at the kyu grade level for males and females.  As we anticipate a smaller number of shodan and nidan competitors, these dan levels may be combined and; if sufficient entries there will be separate male and female divisions .

Adults and veterans –  Competition is organized into separate kyu and dan grades with both male and female divisions for empty hand and weapons kata.

Kumite  – age and weight groupings

Competition (points and contact) is open to 4th kyu and above, organised by gender, grade and weight division. Headgear is compulsory for competitors under 18 (all youth and collegiate) and optional for competitors 19 and over (adults and veterans).

Youth – competition is points kumite only and will be organised into divisions by gender and weight. Depending on entry numbers the tournament organisers will endeavor to offer at least two weight groupings.

Collegiate – competition is points kumite only and will be organised into divisions by gender and weight. Depending on entry numbers the tournament organisers will endeavor to offer at least two  age / weight groupings for collegiate points kumite.

Adults competition for all kumite events are organised into divisions by gender and weight. Tournament organisers may combine divisions, depending on numbers of entrants.
